A Simple Corset: A Beginning in Self-Drafting
This corset was my first try at designing a pattern tailored to my own body. Until now, my patterns had all been adapted from historical corsetry books, so creating one from scratch felt like a meaningful shift. There are many things I’d refine in the design, but it taught me a great deal about fit, structure, and the process of making something truly personal.
Modern Corsetry and Why It Doesn’t Work
Modern corset patterns often rely on very straight lines, achieving shape primarily through tight lacing rather than through the curved seams that historically created the illusion of a sculpted silhouette. This pattern was my first attempt at designing something
closer to those historically accurate, three‑dimensional shapes. There is still much I would change, but it marked an important step toward understanding how true corset shaping is built into the pattern itself.
