Medieval Bathing Dress
This dress was heavily inspired by the medieval bathing dress seen in some paintings from the late 14th to 16th century in Europe, with a few creative differences to suit my project. I made it as the underlayer for my orange medieval costume, using white cotton just as these garments would have been constructed historically. It was a chance to blend research with hands‑on making, honoring the original silhouette while adapting it to my own needs.
A Snapshot into the History of the Medieval Bathing Dress
Examples of this dress appear throughout 14th‑ to 16th‑century artwork and written accounts, showing how common and essential it was. The medieval bathing dress functioned as both an underlayer
and a garment that could be worn while bathing in rivers, streams, or bathhouses, and was usually made from cotton or linen. Simple but significant, it played a key role in medieval clothing practices.
