A Medieval Dress

This dress was created with the B4377 Butterwick costume pattern and thrifted fabric. It was a fun project and a charming piece to wear, but it’s unmistakably a costume—both in its construction and its overall feel—taking broad creative liberties with the historical sources behind it. I love how this dress turned out, but I am excited to eventually draft a more accurate interpretation of this dress that better reflects the period.

Historical Accuracy vs Creative Choice

Fashion loves to revisit garments from throughout history and give them a modern spin to better fit contemporary beauty standards. Many of the historically inaccurate costumes we know and love come from this process of

reinterpretation. The same thing happens when one decade borrows from another, layering inspiration across time. Fashion captures attention, it inspires, it changes, and it repeats.
