A Hobbity Skirt

I’ve wanted a tea‑length wool skirt for quite some time, though the price of good wool has always kept me from taking the plunge. I’ll make one eventually, but for now I have found a delightful alternative in basic flannel. The result is a wonderfully warm, substantial skirt—perfect for winter and for a comfy sewing wardrobe. It fits beautifully into my hobbit‑inspired collection, bringing a touch of whimsy to the everyday outfit.

Flannel vs Wool

I believe flannel and wool give off a very similar appearance in garments, and I’ve been taking full advantage of that when making historically inspired pieces. While wool is obviously superior in terms of durability and performance, flannel offers a wonderful alternative for anyone who is allergic, sensitive to wool, or

simply not ready for the higher price point. It still mimics the look well enough to capture the style, especially when you’re just getting into the craft. I’d much rather experiment with patterns and silhouettes using a more affordable fabric while still creating pieces that have quality and function in a daily wardrobe.
